Hymn-sing
Started working on some new songs for an upcoming collection. Right now, focusing on the ebb and flow of relationships. I'm exploring the initial wooing, the awkward first dance, impossible romantic gestures, and then the hard give and take that make up the bulk of any healthy relationship. Ultimately, the letting go at the end is something I have never done well. We'll see how it all comes out this winter some time I hope. Musically, my offerings have always been quite simple in their constitution and I am not departing from that. I am, perhaps, leaning even deeper into a basic gospel structure as this is what resonates with my own heart so much. When I listen to and sing the old American hymns (many of them Baptist) with their folk melodies, I feel a deep sense of connectedness as if I am tapping into an underground well of expression from the common folk of my ancestry. No pop sound, no sick beats, no talk box; just a hymn-sing.
